Multi-agency Search for Man Missing in Long Island Sound

New York – Authorities are searching for a man missing in Long Island Sound near Milford Point, Conn., after two friends aboard his sailboat noticed he was missing at 6:30 p.m.

The two passengers aboard the sailing vessel, a man and a woman, went below decks with the missing man at the helm at approximately 4:30 p.m. They awoke approximately two hours later and found him missing when they returned to the main deck.

The passengers shot flares into the air. A nearby tug, Great Gull, noticed the flares and notified Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound in New Haven, Conn., of the flare sighting via marine band radio at 6:35 p.m.

A rescue crew from Coast Guard Station New Haven was immediately dispatched.

The crew of the Great Gull also launched their small boat to see if help was needed. They learned that the man was missing and notified the Coast Guard.

A multi-agency search continues including an HH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City, N.J., an HU-25 Falcon jet from Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod, Mass., a Connecticut State Police helicopter, a Suffolk County Police Department boat and helicopter, a boat from the Bridgeport, Conn., Police Department and a boat from the Connecticut State Department of Environmental Protection.

The water temperature in the area is 41 degrees with waves of 1 to 3 feet.
