Missing scuba diver near Eastham, Mass., found alive

BOSTON – A missing Wellfleet, Mass., scuba diver was rescued on Nauset Beach near Eastham, Mass., after a two-hour search tonight.

John Gauthier, was reported missing Sunday evening,  one mile off Nauset Light at 6:15 p.m.  He was located by Eastham Police on the beach around 8:22 p.m. and was escorted to Eastham EMS. Gauthier was examined and released.

Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England received a 911-call reporting Gauthier was last seen with an air tank with only 35 minutes of air remaining.

Sector Southeastern New England issued an urgent marine information broadcast alerting boaters in the area of the missing diver.

Coast Guard Station Chatham launched a 44-motor life boat crew and Air Station Cape Cod launched a Jayhawk rescue helicopter crew to search for the diver.

Chatham and Orleans Harbormasters launched vessels to assist with the search while Eastham Police Department searched along the shore.

“The cooperative efforts of all agencies involved in the search contributed to the quick recovery of the missing diver. We appreciate the concerted efforts of all individuals involved in the case,” said Lt. Marc Smith, senior duty officer, Sector Southeastern New England.
