Missing Independence man found safe at home, claims boat stolen

CLEVELAND — A missing Independence, Ohio, man, whose empty boat prompted a multi-agency search and rescue case, was found safe at his home this morning.

Once reached via cell phone, James Scott Mol reported to the Coast Guard that his boat was stolen, so crews continue to search for possible persons in the water in the vicinity of Cleveland Harbor.

Since first light, a rescue boatcrew aboard a Coast Guard Station Cleveland Harbor 45-foot Response Boat-Medium has been searching the area inside the breakwall near Burke Lakefront Airport. A dive team from the Cleveland Fire Department are now on scene to assist the search.

A rescue aircrew aboard a Coast Guard Air Station Detroit MH-65C Dolphin rescue helicopter was also on scene at first light but has since returned to base after searching for more than an hour and completing two searches with negative results.

Investigators from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and the Coast Guard Investigative Service are going to Mol’s house to get more information.

Nearby boaters had reported a vessel stuck up on the rocks near Burke Lakefront Airport with no one aboard Friday evening, prompting a search by the Coast Guard and a boatcrew from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. ODNR has not been involved in the continued search this morning.
