Missing Anchor Recovered, Safety Zone Removed

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Salvage crews have recovered the separated anchor and chain from the bottom of the Cooper River Sunday at approximately 3:30 p.m.

The Coast Guard Captain of the Port of Charleston has cancelled the safety zone and has re-opened the river to all traffic without restriction.

Previously, the Siteam Aniara, a 584-foot Liberian-flagged tank vessel, lost propulsion in the Cooper River just north of the Ravenel Bridge. The vessel dropped its port anchor, which separated and sank. The Coast Guard established a temporary safety zone to restrict vessel traffic during the recovery of the anchor and chain.
