MILWAUKEE — Coast Guard Sector Lake Michigan hosted its Reserve Senior Leadership Strategic Planning Workshop Friday through Sunday, coinciding with the 75th Anniversary of the Coast Guard Reserve Friday.
Servicing more than 170 reserve members, the purpose of the meeting was to affirm and enhance Reserve force readiness within the sector.
More than 50 senior Coast Guard Reserve men and women were in attendance, including Capt. Julia Hein, the Atlantic Area chief of staff for Reserve affairs, Capt. Fritz Wasco, the Coast Guard’s 9th District senior Reserve officer, and Master Chief Petty Officer Kurt Shoemaker, the 9th District Reserve command master chief.
The meeting’s success stemmed from close working relationships between active duty members and Reserve members, said participants. By utilizing collective problem solving and leveraging the broad range of experiences from those present, senior reserve members gained invaluable information and best practices to pass onto their crews, they said.
“I’m very pleased with all the great initiatives that came out of this meeting that will help us to adapt to the changing personnel requirements and resources constraints that are part of the current landscape,” said Cmdr. Bruce Mack, Sector Lake Michigan’s senior Reserve officer.
The United States Coast Guard Reserve is a worldwide force of more than 8,000 and is an integral part of the nation’s ability to protect its maritime interests both at home and abroad.
