SAN DIEGO – A boat crew from Coast Guard Station San Diego disrupted a suspected human smuggling attempt approximately two miles south of Point Loma, Calif., just before 2 a.m., Friday.
While on patrol, a 33-foot response boat crew encountered a disabled 17-foot boat with eight people aboard, none of whom possessed identification. With the assistance of a U.S. Customs and Border Protection boat crew, it was determined the people aboard were Mexican nationals.
The Coast Guard crew transported the migrants and smuggling boat to San Diego, where the people were transferred to Border Patrol personnel.
The interdiction was part of a coordinated effort by member agencies of the San Diego Maritime Unified Command, the U.S. Coast Guard, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and San Diego Harbor Police. San Diego Maritime Unified Command, comprised of CPB, ICE, the Coast Guard, and other law enforcement partners, is an all-threats multi-agency approach to maritime law enforcement operating in the San Diego and Orange County maritime region.
