Maritime Safety, Security Team storms training center

M CAPE MAY, N.J. – Maritime Safety and Security Team Boston is scheduled to conduct a training evolution for Coast Guard recruits here at Coast Guard Training Center Cape May at 1 p.m., Monday.

MSST members will fast rope from a helicopter onto the training center’s parade field, will secure a building and will answer any questions the recruits may have. This is another opportunity for recruits to see Coast Guard members in action before they graduate.

This is the first time an MSST has conducted a demonstration for recruits. The Coast Guard Cutter Elm from Atlantic Beach, N.C., recently took two recruit companies underway to conduct maintenance on a floating aid to navigation.

Maritime Safety and Security Teams perform a broad range of port security and harbor defense missions. Modeled after the Port Security and harbor defense missions, MSST’s offer a complementary, non-redundant Coast Guard capability that are trained in Maritime Law Enforcement practices and policies, enabling it to augment Coast Guard forces during major marine events, contingencies, and other Coast Guard law enforcement operations primarily in ports, harbors, internal waterways, and coastal regions.
