Man Survives 25 Foot Scaffolding Fall

NEW YORK – A man survived a 25-foot fall from scaffolding to a barge below the Meadowbrook Parkway Number Three Bridge in Freeport, N.Y., at approximately 11:30 a.m. today.

Paramedics reported him to be conscious and suffering from an apparent head injury.

A Coast Guard Station Jones Beach 25-foot rescue boat crew arrived at 11:33 a.m. A Merrick, N.Y., Fire Department paramedic had already stabilized the injured bridge worker and the Coast Guard crew rushed him to Station Jones Beach. A Nassau County Police Department helicopter flew the man to Nassau County Medical Center.

“We were initially contacted by the bridge workers and were on scene within three minutes” said Petty Officer 2nd Class James Grant, the officer of the day at Station Jones Beach. “It is amazing that this guy fell 25 feet to a barge and remained conscious though complaining of a head injury. He is one lucky guy.”

The Coast Guard is investigating the incident.
