CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — After recklessly speeding through Hotel Channel near South Padre Island Sunday, a man was arrested for boating under the influence by local police in coordination with the Coast Guard.

At approximately 9 a.m, watchstanders at Coast Guard Station South Padre Island received a phone call from South Padre Island Police Department, who stated that witnesses reported a boat speeding through the Hotel Channel in a no wake zone. A Coast Guard Maritime Safety and Security Team was dispatched and located the boat with two males and one female aboard. When approached by the MSST, the boat fled and tied up at a nearby dock.

The MSST reached the dock along with SPIPD. The SPIPD conducted a field sobriety test on the operator of the boat and arrested him. The Coast Guard issued a citation for boating under the influence and failing to heave to.

“Alcohol consumption is one of the leading contributing factors in recreational boating fatalities,” said Cmdr. Daniel Deptula, the response officer for Coast Guard Sector Corpus Christi. “Thankfully we were able to locate the boat quickly and prevent them from potentially harming themselves or innocent people in this busy waterway.”

The Coast Guard has been operating with local, state and federal agencies in support of Operation Dry Water, which is a national boating under the influence enforcement campaign meant to stop illicit activities.
