Maine schooner runs aground

BOSTON (D1 Public Affairs) – A Coast Guard boat crew assisted 41 passengers aboard a schooner after the vessel ran aground south of Indian Island around 6:30 p.m., tonight.

Coast Guard Station Eastport, Maine received a radio call reporting the 82-foot vessel Sylvina W. Beal hard aground and in need of assistance.

No injuries or pollution were reported. The vessel is not taking on water.

A 41-foot boat crew launched from Coast Guard Station Eastport and arrived on scene to evacuate the passengers from the stranded vessel.

The passengers were taken off of the Eastport-based vessel and transported to station Eastport.

On scene winds were around eight miles per hour with visibility around 100 yards and calm seas.

The case is under investigation.

“We encourage all boaters to stay alert at sea and have a VHF FM radio aboard in the event they encounter an emergency,” said Lt. Lisa Tinker, command duty officer at Coast Guard Sector Northern New England.
