Key West Coast Guard Auxiliarists earn awards

Coast Guard District 7 NewsKEY WEST, Fla. – An awards presentation recognizing two Coast Guard Auxiliarists was held at Coast Guard Sector Key West Wednesday.

Auxiliarist Fouad Samaha received the Coast Guard Auxiliary Medal of Operational Merit and Auxiliarist Melvianne Cady received the Coast Guard Auxiliary Letter of Commendation for their participation in a search and rescue case on November 2nd.

While conducting an aerial patrol of a 1,000 square mile area southwest of Key West, aboard a single engine Cessna 182, the aircrew overflew the Marquesas Keys and spotted a group of 20 people stranded without food or water. While on scene the aircrew coordinated with a U.S. Navy helicopter and further vectored in Coast Guard boats. As a result of their meticulous mission execution, 20 lives were saved.

“The Coast Guard Auxiliary is an invaluable member of our team,” said Capt. Pat DeQuattro, Coast Guard Sector Key West Commander. “We are grateful for their selfless volunteerism.”

The Coast Guard Auxiliary is the uniformed, volunteer component of the Coast Guard, an invaluable force multiplier, whose members assist the active-duty Coast Guard in most mission areas.
