Juneau Coast Guardsman receives Coast Guard Family of the Year Award

JUNEAU, Alaska – The National Military Family Association recognized a Juneau Coast Guard resident last week as the recipient of the Coast Guard Family of the Year Award for their efforts for volunteering and significantly contributing to support cancer awareness through various national organizations.

Petty Officer 1st Class Aaron Udland, his wife and four children volunteer with the American Cancer Society to help raise money, gain community involvement and awareness. He and his wife are actively involved in the planning committee for the society’s annual fundraiser “Relay For Life”. While Relay For Life is the Udland’s family passion, they also enjoy volunteering and participating in other community events for a variety of organizations such as United Way.

“We look at the Coast Guard as a large organization with more than 40,000 people and to be selected to represent all of the Coast Guard families is just a great honor,” said Udland.

The National Military Family Association receives nominations from active duty, Reserve Component and retiree families of the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Coast Guard, Commissioned Corps of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the Public Health Service and families of fallen service members.

One of the uniformed service families will be named the 2009 Military Family of the Year at the 40th Anniversary Celebration of National Military Family Association on October 28 in Washington D.C.

The National Military Family Association’s award program recognizes strong military families who embrace their service to the nation, are role models in their community and understand that together they are stronger.

Udland graduated Juneau-Douglas High School in 1989 and joined the Coast Guard in 1997. He has been stationed aboard the Coast Guard Cutter’s Long Island, Roanoke Island and Polar Star as well as Coast Guard Station Seattle. He is currently assigned to Station Juneau.
