Injured Man Medevaced from Oil Rig

GALVESTON, Texas – The Coast Guard conducted a long range offshore medevac of a 19-year-old crewman from an oil rig located about 100 miles South East of Galveston, Texas, this morning.

At about 1:53 a.m., a watchstander at Coast Guard Sector Houston/Galveston received a call for assistance from the crew of the oil rig. The crew reported that a pipe had fallen on another crewman’s leg and that it was possibly broken. Crews from Air Station Houston launched an HH-65C Dolphin helicopter and Air Station Corpus Christi launched an HU-25 Falcon jet.

The helicopter landed on the platform and the flight crew, along with crewmembers from the rig, loaded the injured man on board. They transported the man to the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston.

The Falcon jet was sent to provide communications and assistance due to the extreme distance involved.

The injured man was reported to be in stable condition when he arrived at UTMB.
