BOSTON — Coast Guard law enforcement crews assisted in the arrest of an impaired boat operator Sunday, near Portland Harbor, Maine.

Watchstanders at the Coast Guard Sector Northern New England Command Center received notification from a Casco Bay Lines employee of an allision between a 35-foot sailing vessel and the moored 50-foot sailing vessel Frances.

A crew from Coast Guard Station South Portland immediately responded and boarded the 35-foot sailing vessel. Portland Police also arrived and conducted a field sobriety test. Tests determined the operator was impaired and Portland Police arrested him for boating under the influence.

“This is a situation that could have ended far more severely,” said Chief Petty Officer Matthew J. Burt, the command duty officer at the Northern New England Command Center. He said luckily, no one was aboard the Frances at the time.
