DETROIT, Mich. – The U.S. Coast Guard is advising Toledo, Ohio, area residents who recreate on the ice that the Canadian coast guard ship Griffon is scheduled to break ice, Thursday, in preparation for the transit of the motor vessel Algocanada en route to Toledo.

The Algocanada will be coming through the Detroit River into Lake Erie and the Toledo area, immediately preceded by the Canadian coast guard ship Griffon. A commercial icebreaker will escort the vessel through the Maumee River.

Ice breaking operations will impact the western basin of Lake Erie into Maumee Bay and up the Maumee River to a commercial terminal above the CSX railroad bridge.

Any ice in those areas should be considered unsafe and the Coast Guard advises everyone to stay clear.
