BOSTON — A Coast Guard husband and wife were presented the Newmyer Maritime Heritage Award Wednesday during a ceremony at the Hull Lifesaving Museum in Hull.
Victoria Stevens, the museum’s curator, presented Senior Chief Petty Officer Eric Brown, the executive officer of Coast Guard Station Point Allerton, and Chief Petty Officer Amy Petersen, the officer in charge of Coast Guard Station Boston, the award to honor them for supporting the museum’s programs and for helping to build connections between today’s Coast Guard and Hull’s maritime heritage.
Brown and Petersen each serve as valued leaders at their respective units where they each work to support and ensure maritime safety and security in Boston Harbor. They both expressed appreciation for the hard work of their crews and support from their communities. The couple will be transferring later this year to Coast Guard units in New Jersey.
The Hull Lifesaving Museum, founded in 1978, is housed in the former Point Allerton U.S. Lifesaving Station, which was opened in 1889 under the leadership of Joshua James who, with his crews of the Massachusetts Humane Society and U.S. Lifesaving Service and the Revenue Cutter Service, were merged to form today’s Coast Guard.
Today, the museum preserves the region’s lifesaving ethos and the traditions of coastal seamanship and maritime skills through storytelling, exhibits, and experiential water-based programs that instill the core values of teamwork and courage in new generations.
