Houston student to receive Coast Guard Meritorious Public Service Award

HOUSTON – The Coast Guard is scheduled to present a Meritorious Public Service Award to a local student Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at the West Gulf Marine Association in Houston.

Melanie Acker, 16, will receive the award for her heroic actions in saving the lives of three college students on Sept. 3, 2006.

While canoeing with her family, Acker saw the three men struggling in Village Creek near Beaumont. She jumped in the water and, using skills she had recently learned through the Red Cross, saved all three men.

The award presentation will take place at the beginning of the West Gulf Marine Association Board Meeting for July. Capt. William Diehl, the Commander of Coast Guard Sector Houston/Galveston, will be presenting the award.
