Homer-based Coast Guard Auxiliary rescues crew of Leah Kay 34 miles from Homer

17th Coast Guard District NewsKODIAK, Alaska – The 36-foot Homer-based Coast Guard Auxiliary vessel Quanah P rescued and towed the 34-foot fishing vessel Leah Kay with two crewmembers aboard 34 miles to Homer Thursday evening.

Coast Guard Sector Anchorage watchstanders received a call via VHF-FM radio at 9:20 a.m. from the crew of the Leah Kay reporting they lost propulsion. The watchstanders issued a marine assistance request broadcast asking any mariners in the area to assist.

With no one able to respond to the assistance broadcast the watchstanders directed the launch of the Auxiliary crew at 12:20 p.m. The Quanah P crew arrived on scene at 2:54 p.m. and took the Leah Kay and its crew under tow to Homer.

The Auxiliary crew and the Leah Kay crew safely arrived in Homer at 9 p.m.

The weather at the time of the rescue was reported as winds of 17 mph with two foot seas.
