HILTON HEAD, S.C. — Coast Guardsmen from Sector Charleston and Marine Safety Unit Savannah, Ga., continue working with local contractors in response to a diesel fuel sheen in the vicinity of Jarvis Creek, near Hilton Head Island, S.C., Wednesday.
The sheen was initially reported to be in the vicinity of two grounded commercial fishing vessels, the Lady Essie and Dianie, which are partially submerged in Jarvis Creek. Responders determined the pollution threat was coming from both vessels and deployed two layers of boom to absorb the potential release of diesel fuel.
The Coast Guard worked with Moran Environmental Recovery, an oil spill response organization, to limit any pollution impacts to the environment. Moran inspected the both vessels and verified that all fuel tanks are empty aboard the vessels.
Currently, there is no significant threat to the environment.
Watchstanders at the Coast Guard Sector Charleston command center were notified of the situation Friday morning.
The cause of the incident is under investigation.
