Highway 70 bridge in James City nears completion

JAMES CITY, N.C. – Construction on the Alfred A. Cunningham Bridge on U.S. Highway 70 is nearly completed, and the main channel is scheduled to reopen to vessel traffic Jan. 11.

The alternate, temporary channel which has been in use during the construction will be closed upon reopening of the main channel.

One pile cap will remain in place, partially obstructing the main channel until its removal, scheduled for Jan. 14. In accordance with Coast Guard regulations, the cap will be lit at night. Vessel traffic will have approximately 40 feet of clearance on both sides of this obstruction.

There is a possibility for delays to vessel traffic during the removal of the pile cap and construction equipment.

The Coast Guard advises mariners to use extreme caution when transiting the area and maintain the appropriate safe speed in order to minimize wake.
