Happy 233rd Birthday Marines

The staff of Coast Guard News would like to wish a happy 233rd birthday to the United States Marine Corps. In honor of them, here is what may be the greatest commercial ever made for the Marines, followed by Admiral Allen’s birthday message.

On behalf of all the men and women in the United States Coast Guard, I am honored to extend birthday greetings to the United States Marine Corps on the 233rd anniversary of your founding.

On November 10, 1775, the Continental Congress called for the creation of two battalions of marines to be raised, consisting of “Good seamen, or so acquainted with maritime affairs as to be able to serve to advantage by sea when required”. This act created the name “American Marines” and a legend was born.

Since that day, the Marine Corps has been on the front lines of America’s conflicts. From the walls of Chapultepec Castle, to the trenches of Belleau Wood, to the neighborhoods of Al Anbar Province, you have taken the fight to our adversaries. Expeditionary, light, and lethal, throughout our history you have answered the call for the American people and remained Semper Fidelis to our nation.

In World War II we went from ship to shore as a team from Guadalcanal to Iwo Jima. Today we train side by side at the Special Missions Training Center at Court House Bay. Marine helicopters recently vertically inserted Coast Guard Maritime Safety and Security Teams in exercises in Hawaii. Finally, we are operating together in the Northern Arabian Gulf.

I look forward to working with my Capstone classmate Commandant Jim Conway as the Marine Corps, United States Coast Guard and the United States Navy defend America’s maritime interests as the worlds premier 21st century naval force.

ADM Thad W. Allen, Commandant, United States Coast Guard
