Halifax River swimmer located safe, search called off

ATLANTIC BEACH, Fla. – The search that began after witnesses lost sight of a woman who was swimming across the Halifax River in Daytona Beach, Florida, was called off after Daytona Beach Police located her on shore Wednesday.

Daytona Beach Police found the woman safe on shore a few blocks away from the Seabreeze Bridge about 12:20 p.m.

The search began after two witnesses reported seeing the woman jump into the river to swim to the other side but lost sight of her and called 911.

Dispatchers notified watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Jacksonville at 9 a.m.

Boatcrews from Coast Guard Station Ponce De Leon Inlet, Florida, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and Volusia County Sheriff’s Office began searching the area. A helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater, Florida, was also alerted and was making preparations to launch when the woman was found.
