Great Lakes Coast Guard rescues 6 already this weekend, reminds boaters to watch the weather

Coast Guard District 9 NewsCLEVELAND — In light of two successful search and rescue missions Saturday, the Coast Guard is urging mariners to be mindful of the weather before venturing out to recreate on the Great Lakes.

According to the National Weather Service, gale warnings and/or storm warnings are in effect this weekend throughout the Great Lakes region.  At various times this weekend, mariners may experience wind gusts up to 50 knots, with waves in some areas possibly reaching 15-20 feet.

“Of course, we want people to enjoy the Great Lakes region and all that these waterways have to offer,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Antonio Martinez, a search and rescue controller at the 9th Coast Guard District Communications Center in Cleveland.

“But, our priority is that people are safe and don’t needlessly put themselves in dangerous situations.  With that being said, due to the weather out there, this probably isn’t the weekend you want to venture out onto the lakes.”
