Good Samaritans, Coast Guard rescue 2 from sinking watercraft

11th Coast Guard District NewsSAN DIEGO – Good Samaritans and the U.S. Coast Guard worked together to rescue two people aboard a sinking personal watercraft 13 miles southwest of San Diego, Tuesday morning.

The Joint Harbor Operation Center, located at Coast Guard Sector San Diego, received a distress call at approximately 10:30 a.m. from the people aboard the water craft near the Coronado Islands, Mexico.

The Coast Guard diverted an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter and the Coast Guard Cutter Petrel to assist the people aboard the sinking craft.

Nearby boaters responded quickly, taking the two people in distress aboard a 30-foot pleasure craft.

The Petrel arrived on scene and took the two U.S. citizens aboard the cutter.

Petrel’s crew transported the people and towed the watercraft to Shelter Island in San Diego.
