JUNEAU, Alaska – A Good Samaritan vessel rescued four people from a fishing vessel after the crew purposefully beached the vessel on the north side of Fleming Island after it began taking on water approximately 60 miles from Whittier, Alaska.
The Northern Mariner, a 110-foot fishing vessel homeported in Seattle, began taking on water and requested assitance from the Coast Guard Marine Safety Detachment Valdez at approximately 8:30 last night. The crew then beached the vessel and boarded a life raft.
The crew of the Good Samaritan vessel Tenacious responded to an Urgent Marine Information Broadcast and is on scene with the Northern Mariner. The Northern Mariner crew will be taken to Whittier by the Tenacious.
The Coast Guard is planning to launch a helicopter from Air Station Kodiak at first light this morning to assess the situation.
No injuries and no pollution have been reported.
