Good Samaritan Rescues 4 People in Ugak Bay

KODIAK, Alaska – Four people are safe after their fishing vessel capsized in Ugak Bay near Kodiak Island this morning.

The crew of the 42-foot fishing vessel Golden Girls were rescued by the fishing vessel Chiniak after the Coast Guard released an urgent marine information broadcast to vessels in the area.

The Chiniak responded and took two of the Golden Girls crew members aboard. The other two crew members safely reached shore in Eagle Harbor.

At 8:44 a.m., the Coast Guard launched an HH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Air Station Kodiak after receiving a distress signal from a 406 emergency position indicating radio beacon originating in Ugak Bay.

The Coast Guard arrived within 15 minutes and after confirming that the crew of the Golden Girls were safe returned to the air station.

The vessel remains partially submerged. The cause of the incident is being investigated by Coast Guard Marine Safety Detachment Kodiak.

Mariners are encouraged to ensure all necessary safety equipment is onboard and in working condition. Coast Guard Marine Safety Detachments are available to assist mariners by conducting free commercial fishing vessel safety exams.
