Fuel Barges Breakaway From Tow Vessel in St. Louis Harbor

ST. LOUIS – The Coast Guard is investigating an incident involving two loaded fuel barges which broke free from the tow vessel KEITH GELVIN after the vessel lost all propulsion in the St. Louis harbor, just north of the McKinley Bridge today.

Coast Guard Sector Upper Mississippi River in coordination with the St. Louis Harbor Coalition quickly responded calling all vessels in the area to assist. The barges were quickly recovered by another vessel in the area after they floated under the McKinley Bridge without striking the bridge. The barges were recovered as they were approaching the MLK and Eads bridges.

The Coast Guard also quickly notified Missouri and Illinois officials regarding the possible need to close the bridges to protect the public in the event the barges struck the bridges.

Coast Guard Sector Upper Mississippi River dispatched a command duty response team to investigate the cause of the incident.
