This Day in Coast Guard History:
1941 – The Navy formally established the Greenland Patrol by combining the South Greenland Patrol with the three cutters of the Northeast Greenland Patrol.
1985 – Coast Guard Cuter Polar Sea arrived home to Seattle after a voyage through the Northwest Passage by way of the Panama Canal, the east coast, and then Greenland, sparking an international incident with Canada. She completed the first solo circumnavigation of the North American continent by a U.S. vessel and the first trip by a Polar-Class icebreaker. She also captured the record for the fastest transit of the historic northern route. She had departed Seattle to begin the voyage on 6 June 1985.

While operating in the northern waters of the Gulf, a small vessel capsized in a remote area leaving five Iranian mariners stranded with no one to rescue them. This was the scenario these men faced prior to their chance discovery by the crew of U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Maui.

We had a productive day today overall. It started with a few hours of firefighting basics, extinguishers and equipment. We are all really excited to do the firefighting practical tomorrow, as it will help us ultimately be prepared to fight a fire out on a cutter or even at a small boat station. They really prepare us for everything so no situation comes as a surprise, and we all appreciate that.

The crew’s primary missions include search and rescue, living marine resources, port, waterways and coastal security and other law enforcement activities. The Alex Haley is also known throughout the region for lifesaving rescues and the preservation of domestic fisheries.

The Coast Guard is now facing a 5 percent budget cut even as sequestration costs it an additional 5 percent. Plans to modernize its mostly obsolete fleet are at “dead ahead slow.”
Given its vast duties on the ocean, Great Lakes and rivers — including Search And Rescue (saving an average of 10 people a day), port security, oil spill response, drug and migrant interdiction, ship inspections, fisheries enforcement, etc. — the public interest might better be served by doubling their $10 billion budget.
Former Coast Guard cutter headed to scrap yard – Anchorage Daily News
Attempts to save the Storis, once the longest-serving cutter in the U.S. Coast Guard, have failed and the ship will be stripped and sold for scrap metal.
The Storis will be towed Friday from California to Mexico, where is will be scrapped,
