Fishermen safe after boat capsizes east of Block Island

BOSTON – Three fishermen are safe after their boat capsized two miles east of Block Island, R.I., today forcing them into 55-degree water.

The fishing vessel Susan C., home ported in Wakefield, R.I., called for help on a VHF radio at about 4:45 p.m., stating that they were donning survival suits because their boat was going down.

Sector Southeastern New England command center staff immediately dispatched a helicopter crew from Air Station Cape Cod and a motor lifeboat crew from Station Point Judith. They also made a radio broadcast, asking nearby mariners to help.

When the Coast Guard boat crew arrived, a Good Samaritan, the fishing vessel Fun Yet, was recovering the three fishermen from the water.

Initial reports indicate that one fisherman suffered minor injuries.

The Coast Guard crew is escorting the Fun Yet as they transport the three men to Station Point Judith, where EMS will be waiting.

The identities of the three men are unknown.
