NEW LONDON, Conn. — The U.S. Coast Guard Academy recognized the contributions of Dr. Ernest J. Manfred April 11 and awarded him the title of Distinguished Professor Emeritus.
The Distinguished Professor Emeritus award distinguishes faculty members who have compiled especially impressive records of service including outstanding contributions to the Academy, Coast Guard, or society beyond that normally expected of faculty members, and worthy of special recognition. This is the first time in over a decade that the Academy has awarded this prestigious title.
Dr. Manfred received his bachelor’s degree from Central Connecticut State in 1960, a master’s degree in math from the University of Connecticut in 1967, and his doctorate in math from the University of Northern Colorado in 1979.

He began working at the Academy in 1969 and taught over 4,000 cadets during his career, many of whom have gone on to distinguished careers in the Coast Guard.
During his time at the Academy, Dr. Manfred served in a variety of high profile positions including Faculty Advisor, President of the Faculty Senate, Credential Committee member, Mathematical Association of America representative, NCAA Faculty Representative, Director of CGA Research, and Chair of the Coast Guard Academy Speakers Bureau.
He also served as Head of the Mathematics Department for 13 years and was instrumental in the creation of the Operations Research and Computer Analysis major.
He retired after 40 years of teaching in 2009 and was awarded the Coast Guard Academy Alumni Association’s Distinguished Faculty Award. In 2010 he was awarded the status of Professor Emeritus.
Dr. Manfred was officially presented his new designation during a ceremony April 11 prior to being the honored guest during the Corps of Cadets Regimental Review.
