Coast Guard medevacs diver suffering from decompression sickness near Cortez, Florida

CORTEZ, Fla. — A 59-year-old man was rescued by a Coast Guard crew Thursday 40 miles west of Cortez after he resurfaced from a 150-foot dive showing signs of decompression sickness.

Rescued was Michael Reichard.

A person aboard a 25-foot boat contacted watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg, Florida, via VHF-FM channel 16 radio reporting Reichard took a single dive to 150-feet and then resurfaced after running out of air.

An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater, Florida arrived on scene and hoisted Reichard aboard the helicopter and transported him to Gulf Coast Medical Center in Fort Myers, Florida where he was transferred to emergency medical personnel.
