Diesel Fuel Spill Reported in Newport Marina

NEW YORK—The Coast Guard is investigating a reported 100-gallon diesel oil spill in the Newport Marina in Jersey City, N.J. reported around 9:30 p.m. today.

A Jersey City Fire Department marine unit contacted Coast Guard Sector New York via marine band radio to notify them that 100-gallons of diesel fuel was reportedly discharged into the marina by a faulty generator on shore.

Coast Guard Sector New York immediately sent two pollution investigators to Newport Marina to investigate.

“Our objective at this early stage is to secure the source of the spill, contain it and prevent any further pollution from entering the water,” said Lt. j.g. Richard Sullivan, Command Duty Officer at Sector New York.

Newport Marina is located just north of the Morris Canal.
