Diesel Fuel Spill Near Valdez

JUNEAU, Alaska – Response personnel from the Alaska Chadux Corporation in coordination with Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit Valdez and the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation are set to begin a surface clean-up and remove the remaining diesel fuel from the fishing vessel (F/V) Nordic Viking, which ran hard aground late Saturday evening breaching one of its nine fuel tanks.

Response crews arrived on scene early yesterday afternoon to assess the extent of pollution from the Nordic Viking. An estimated amount of up to 3,500 gallons of diesel fuel was spilled upon grounding.

Currently, a light sheen of diesel fuel has drifted away from shore and is evaporating. As of yesterday, the sheen was approximately 5.75 miles in length and 200 feet wide.

The Coast Guard will continue to conduct over-flights to monitor the fuel sheen.

The cause of the grounding is under investigation.
