Cutter Resolute Home for the Holidays

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The crew of Coast Guard Cutter Resolute, homeported in St. Petersburg, Fla., is scheduled to return home Dec. 23, at 9 a.m. after a 38-day patrol in the Florida Straits.

In its five weeks of patrol, Resolute was tasked with migrant interdiction, drug interdiction, search and rescue, and security operations.  The crew patrolled the seas between Key West, Fla., and Cuba searching for vessels attempting to illegally enter the United States.  Resolute was tasked as a forward operations center and holding platform, and coordinated the location and efforts of other Coast Guard assets, including a HH-65 Dolphin Helicopter from CG Air Station Detroit.  During a 24-day period of around-the-clock operations, the crew interdicted an unseaworthy Cuban vessel overloaded with 16 Cuban migrants, coordinated the efforts of four Coast Guard assets in the chase and subsequent interdiction of two go-fast vessels involved with migrant smuggling, and provided humanitarian care for more than 200 Cuban migrants while they were interviewed by Customs and Immigration Service and their dispositions were pending.  All migrants received food, water, shelter and medical attention while aboard Resolute.

During the patrol, Resolute crewmembers aided the sailing vessel Lady Anne, which encountered rough seas while transiting to the Caribbean and was disabled with a torn sail.  Facing unexpected conditions, the lone master became exhausted in his attempt to continue with his voyage and could not sail the vessel.  Resolute crewmembers manned the vessel for 12 hours and steered it to calm, safe waters before releasing it to a commercial towing company.

The Resolute is a 210-foot Medium Endurance Cutter. Resolute is under the command of Cmdr. G. Todd Prestidge.  The cutter has a crew of 12 officers and 68 enlisted personnel.

The crew is happy to be home with their family and friends in time for the holidays and appreciates the support of the Tampa Bay community.  To welcome our family and friends that will meet the ship upon return to St. Petersburg, the crew of Resolute will be bringing Santa Claus home to meet the children and hand out Christmas presents.
