SAN DIEGO – The Coast Guard Cutter Edisto, based in San Diego, working with the crew of a Coast Guard C-130 aircraft, based out of Air Station Sacramento, recovered more than six tons of marijuana from the waters off of Baja California, Mexico, Dec. 4.
On a routine patrol, the crew of the aircraft spotted a go-fast vessel and relayed the position to the Edisto. The crew of the aircraft worked to remain covert and relayed position updates to the Edisto as it moved towards the vessel’s position.
Once the Edisto came within range of the vessel, the speedboat’s crew was observed throwing bales into the water.
Edisto’s crew did not intercept the speedboat, but they recovered the bales from the water, which later tested positive as marijuana.
The contraband was turned over to the appropriate federal authorities.
The incident is currently under investigation.
