ANCHORAGE, Alaska — The 42-foot fishing vessel Currency, which partially sank after grounding in Muskomee Bay Saturday, was refloated and safely towed to Kodiak by the 35-foot fishing vessel Letun arriving safely at 8:30 a.m. Sunday.
Coast Guard personnel from Marine Safety Detachment Kodiak examined the damage and plan to visit the vessel again today.
The crew of the Homer-based vessel reported to the Coast Guard they had run aground at 11:33 a.m. Saturday and requested assistance to stop the flooding.
No pollution or injuries were reported. The vessel had 200 to 300 gallons of diesel on board.
Two pumps and a radio were delivered to the vessel by the crew of a Coast Guard helicopter. In combination with the pumps and the outgoing tide, the vessel’s three crewmen were able to make temporary repairs to the three foot by half inch gash in the hull using plywood secured with screws and five layers of fiberglass matte over the wood.
The Letun is also based out of Homer. The cause of the grounding remains under Coast Guard investigation.
