Crews remove derailed train, Coast Guard reopens Intracoastal Waterway

CHESAPEAKE, Va. – A crane barge arrived at the A & C Canal Bridge, in the Centerville area of Chesapeake, at 12:35 a.m. Saturday, for crews to lift a locomotive hanging off the canal bridge so another locomotive could pull it back onto the track.

The crews began lifting the train at 1:25 a.m. and it was pulled onto the track at 1:57 a.m. It was checked for safety issues before moving it to another location just before 4 a.m.

The contracted environmental cleanup crews were also able to work some through the night making the cleanup 70 percent complete. They cleaned enough for the Coast Guard to reopen the waterway with restrictions at 9:20 a.m. The restriction is that anyone transiting the Intracoastal Waterway in that location must use their slowest speed until the cleanup is complete. The Intracoastal Waterway was closed from the Great Bridge Lock to the Centerville Turnpike.
