Cosco Busan clean up report for Nov. 21, 2007

SAN FRANCISCO – The most recent information about the clean up is as follows:

  • Total personnel employed: 1,154
  • Total gallons discharged: 58,000
  • Total birds captured: 1,039
  • Total birds cleaned: 740
  • Total birds released: 76
  • Total birds died in facility: 424
  • Total birds dead on arrival: 1,467
  • Remaining Feet of boom laid out: 1,600
  • Number of contracted aircraft: 1

The Unified Command is planning to have cleaning teams on the following beaches from Nov.21 to Nov. 24:

  • Albany Beach
  • Emeryville Marina
  • Berkley Marina
  • Brooks Island
  • Richmond Marina/Shinada Friendship Park
  • Angel Island
  • Horsehoe Cove

Additional “hot shot” teams will be on standby to respond to oil sightings.

The Cosco Busan oil spill Unified Command would like to remind the public that there are still volunteer opportunities available for beach cleanups throughout the upcoming weekend.

The Cosco Busan oil spill Unified Command is recommending that anyone who has recovered tarballs or oiled debris from the shoreline dispose of them properly in bins located throughout Bay Area beaches.

Oily waste should not be disposed of in regular trashcans, and if oily waste is collected it should be taken to the designated collection locations.

People are still advised not to recover and clean beaches in areas impacted by the spill without the necessary training. To report oil sightings or questions involving oil disposal please contact: (415) 398-9617.
