Contract Awarded For National Security Cutter Midgett

Washington – The Coast Guard awarded a fixed-price incentive firm contract option valued at approximately $499.76 million to Huntington Ingalls Industries for the production of the eighth national security cutter March 31, 2015. The eighth NSC, Coast Guard Cutter Midgett, will be built at Huntington Ingalls Industries’ shipyard in Pascagoula, Mississippi. This award puts the final NSC in the Coast Guard’s acquisition program of record on contract.

Four NSCs, the Coast Guard cutters Bertholf, Waesche, Stratton and Hamilton, are fully operational and executing Coast Guard missions in the field. Bertholf, Waesche and Stratton are homeported in Alameda, California. Hamilton is homeported in Charleston, South Carolina.

The fifth NSC, James, is scheduled for delivery and commissioning this year. The sixth NSC, Munro, is scheduled for delivery in 2016. Fabrication of the seventh NSC, Kimball, began earlier this year. Kimball is scheduled for delivery in 2018.

The NSC is the most technologically sophisticated cutter in the Coast Guard fleet, capable of performing critical homeland security, law enforcement and national defense missions in the most demanding open ocean environments. The cutter is 418 feet long, has a top speed of 28 knots, a range of 12,000 miles and endurance to perform 60- to 90-day patrols.
