DAUPHIN ISLAND, Ala. – At approximately 11 a.m. today, US Coast Guard Lt. Kenneth Wayne Miller, along with several other good Samaritans freed a man trapped in a burning vehicle on the Dauphin Island Bridge.
After initial attempts to kick in the windows were unsuccessful, Miller used a pipe extension to smash the side windows of the burning vehicle. Miller proceeded to work with others on scene to pull the man out of the burning vehicle while several drivers used fire extinguishers to fight back the hot flames.
The local Fire Department and an ambulance arrived in response to the 911 calls. The victim was then transported to the University of South Alabama Regional Burn Center for treatment.
Miller is a U.S. Coast Guard reservist from Sector Los Angeles/Long Beach and is currently serving as the Mobile County Branch Director as part of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill response effort.
