Coast Guardsman killed in car accident

PORTLAND, Maine – A Coast Guardsman was killed in a car accident around 1:55 a.m., Sunday in Westport Island, Maine.

Coast Guard Chief Boatswain’s Mate David L. Smith, the officer in charge of Coast Guard Station Boothbay Harbor, Maine, was traveling on Route 144 near the Westport Island Bridge, when his vehicle entered a curve, crossed into the north-bound lane, entered a ditch, and struck a tree.

Members of the Westport Island and Wiscasset Fire Department and a Wiscasset ambulance responded to the scene.

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s office is conducting an investigation into the cause of the crash.

“The Coast Guard is grieving the loss of Chief Smith, who was a sea-going professional and had a profound impact of the crew of Station Boothbay Harbor and many others he encountered during his career,” said Commander Michael Ryan, the deputy commander of Coast Guard Sector Northern New England. “We are working diligently to be sure our personnel have the right support and resources to help them cope with this tragedy.”

Memorial services have not yet been scheduled.
