Astoria, OR – The Coast Guard air-lifted one of its own from the Cutter Jarvis today at 10:40 a.m.
Coast Guard Air Station Astoria received a call from the Jarvis at approximately 6:00 p.m. Friday. A member of its crew needed to be air-lifted from the ship after they were unable to remove an object that was lodged in the man’s throat. An HH-60 helicopter crew from Astoria flew 207 miles to the Jarvis to retrieve the 18-year-old man while a C-130 air crew from Coast Guard Air Station Sacramento provided observational support.
The member was taken to Astoria and delivered to Columbia Memorial Hospital where the obstruction was removed. He was later released and will serve aboard the Cutter Active until he can rejoin his crew.
The Cutter Jarvis is a 378-foot High Endurance Cutter homeported in Honolulu, Hawaii. Its missions include Law Enforcement, Search and Rescue, Military Readiness and Marine Environmental Protection. The Jarvis had been transiting to San Fransisco after performing fisheries law enforcement in Alaska.
