COAST GUARD ISLAND, ALAMEDA, Calif. – In true naval fashion the final entry into the Storis Ship’s log will read, “The Running Lights have been extinguished and the chronometer allowed to run down. The Galley fires have been doused and the crew’s rations commuted. The shafts have been locked and the rudder placed amidships. The cannonballs have been removed and the ships cannons have been spiked. All Secure about the decks. USCGC Storis (WMEC 38) is prepared to disestablish.”
Thursday will mark the last time that the Storis’s crew will cross the ship’s brow during its active service to the Coast Guard.
The Coast Guard Cutter Storis will be retired Thursday during a decommissioning ceremony at Coast Guard Base Kodiak. The ship, which was commissioned in 1942, will have served more than 64 years in the Coast Guard.
Persons attending the ceremony should plan to arrive at the base gym no later than 9:45. The ceremony will begin promptly at 10:00 a.m.
