NORFOLK, Va. — Cadet Michael Shermot was found guilty of sexual assault, and sentenced today to one year in prison and dismissal from the service by the military judge, Capt. Gary E. Felicetti, at general court-martial.
Shermot, who was found guilty yesterday of violating Article 120 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice, has the right to appeal his conviction and sentence. He was charged on Dec. 28, 2015, and suspended from the Corps of Cadets for serious misconduct the following day.
The Coast Guard remains committed to creating a culture intolerant of sexual assault, and the behaviors that enable it, and will continue efforts to eliminate sexual assault from its ranks through a strong culture of respect and prevention.
