Coast Guard, Wrightsville Beach Ocean Rescue crews searching for man near Wrightsville Beach, NC

60 Elizabeth CityWILMINGTON, N.C. — The Coast Guard and Wrightsville Beach Ocean Rescue personnel are searching Tuesday for a man who was last seen swimming at Wrightsville Beach.

Watchstanders at the Coast Guard Sector North Carolina Command Center in Wilmington received notification from New Hanover County 911 dispatchers at about 5:41 p.m. that a 58-year-old Wilmington man last seen swimming at about 8 a.m. at Wrightsville Beach was missing. His wife located his parked vehicle after learning he did not show up for work.

Sector North Carolina watchstanders issued an urgent marine information broadcast, and a 45-foot Response Boat-Medium crew launched from Coast Guard Station Wrightsville Beach at about 5:48 p.m. An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City launched at about 7:40 p.m. after delays due to thunderstorms.

Both Coast Guard crews are on scene searching, and Wrightsville Beach Ocean Rescue crews are searching from shore.

The water temperature in the search area is about 81 degrees, and visibility is about 10 miles.
