Coast Guard working with industry to free grounded vessel

TOLEDO, Ohio – Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit Toledo personnel are working with industry representatives to develop a salvage and lightering plan for freeing a grounded vessel near Sandusky, Ohio, Monday.

The Canadian flagged self-discharging bulk cargo vessel CSL NIAGARA, owned by V Ships Canada and loaded with approximately 30,000 Metric Tons of Coal, grounded in the Moseley Channel, Sunday morning.

V Ships Canada has contracted three tugs to assist with the salvage evolution but weather and lake conditions are hindering salvage operations.

No pollution or flooding has been observed. The company’s pollution response organization has been notified and is on standby to respond in the event of a discharge.
