Coast Guard working to assess grounded vessel near Rhode Island

BOSTON — Coast Guard responders are working with federal, state and local port partners to assess a vessel that grounded in the vicinity of Brenton Reef, at approximately 6 p.m., Sunday.

Crewmembers from the Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England command center in Woods Hole, Mass., received notification that the 65-foot fishing vessel Five J’s, went aground north of Brenton Point State park at 6 p.m., Sunday.

The vessel’s operator reported the vessel lost power and its anchor was unable to hold. It is unclear why the vessel lost power.

The vessel can reportedly hold up to 1,000 gallons of diesel fuel, and responding personnel are working with the vessel’s owner to confirm the quantity of fuel on board.

The Coast Guard is investigating the cause of the incident.
