Coast Guard welcomes new Sector Hampton Roads commander and Captain of the Port of Virginia

PORTSMOUTH, Va. — The Coast Guard conducted a change of command ceremony here welcoming a new sector commander and captain of the port, Friday.

Capt. John Little relieved Capt. Mark Ogle as the commander of Coast Guard Sector Hampton Roads and the Captain of the Port of Virginia.

The commander is responsible for the Coast Guard’s port safety and security, search and rescue, law enforcement, aids to navigation, marine environmental protection and commercial vessel safety missions. The sector commander exercises federal authority granted by law and regulation as the captain of the port, officer in charge of marine inspections, federal maritime security coordinator, search and rescue mission coordinator and federal on-scene coordinator.

The area of responsibility for the sector includes Virginia and the Atlantic Coast of Maryland.

Ogle’s next assignment is the chief of future operations for the Coast Guard Atlantic Area command located here.

Little has been serving as the deputy commander of Sector Hampton Roads since 2009.
