SEATTLE – Coast Guard and Washington State Department of Ecology personnel are overseeing the response to the sunken 34-foot fishing vessel Streaker north of Rainbow Bridge near La Conner, Washington, Wednesday.
Global Diving and Salvage technicians, who were contracted using funds from the Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund, are en route and will remove all remaining petroleum products from the vessel.
“We have responders on scene to monitor the cleanup efforts,” said Lt. j.g. Madeline Ede, an investigator from the Incident Management Division at Coast Guard Sector Puget Sound in Seattle. “Our goal is to mitigate any possible environmental damage through a collaborative effort with our agency partner, cleanup personnel and the responsible party.”
IMD investigators received the initial report of the sunken vessel at 10:30 a.m. from the Department of Ecology.
The vessel reportedly sank overnight with up to 75 gallons of petroleum product on board. The cause is under investigation.
