Coast Guard, Virginia Maritime Association conduct safety seminar

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – Coast Guard Sector Hampton Roads and the Virginia Maritime Association will hold a tug boat crewmember safety seminar, at Coast Guard Integrated Support Command Portsmouth, Thursday at 8 a.m.

The 11th Annual Towing Vessel Safety Seminar is the largest recurring event of its kind in the United States. During the eight-hour day, attendees participate in classroom exercises, listen to presentations by subject matter experts, and are given the opportunity to participate in hands-on training like fighting fires, firing distress signal flares, learning how to put on a survival suit, and board a life raft.

Tug crews will also compete against each other in a skills test during the 2nd Annual Tugboatmen’s Challenge starting at 3:45 p.m.
